Flood survivors get relief items

Evangelical Lutheran Development Service has donated relief items to 210 households affected by Tropical Storm Ana in Zomba District.

The items included bags of maize, beans, buckets, pots and soap.

Speaking during the donation on Wednesday in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwambo, Evangelical Lutheran Development Service board chairperson Sute Mwakasungula said they will provide the relief to the families for three months. 

He said: “In 2019, we also assisted people from this area affected by Cyclone Idai.

“We are asking our partners to help with agricultural inputs to help the people to plant again.”

Zomba District assistant fisheries officer Great Munthali commended the organisation for the timely support.

“At least 37 880 people in Zomba were affected by Tropical Storm Ana. But we appeal for more support to help people living in seven evacuation camps,” he said.

Munthali said with support from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, they constructed a dike to control the flow of water from five rivers.

One of the beneficiaries, Redia Nankhonya said she had no food as she lost everything to the disaster.
